On Wednesday’s broadcast of MSNBC’s “Hardball,” NBC News Law Enforcement Analyst and former ATF Special Agent Jim Cavanaugh stated that the “argument that gun safety laws don’t work” has “jumped Shark Week. It’s gone. Look at these mass killings. That argument is gone.”

Cavanaugh said, “Well, it’s not going to stop, unless we as the voters want to change it, for many reasons, not only gun safety laws, but many other reasons, mental health, restraining orders, maybe mass violence prevention, restraining orders as I suggest.”

Cavanaugh then discussed the “tragedy triangle” of people who have mental problems, guns, and “some kind of a threat or interaction with the police.”

He concluded, “And you know, the argument that gun safety laws don’t work has — I mean, it’s jumped Shark Week. It’s gone. Look at these mass killings. That argument is gone. We need to have reasonable laws, not take away anybody’s rights. Everybody’s got to work together, or we’re making the Second Amendment a suicide pact for all of us, our children, the mall, the school, the college.”
